Victory, Helen and Mariska have been nominated for the Prize Yacht de Tradition of the Year (PYTA) organized by French newspaper Les Echos. The three yachts that have been selected among those in Cannes by a special Jury that will announce the name of the winner at the end of November in Paris are Victory a working boat that debuted to the Régates Royales in Cannes this year, Helen an Alfred Mylne’s design dating back to 1936 and Mariska designed by Fife in 1908. The jury was composed by Frédéric Berthoz (President of the French traditional yachts Association AFYT), Gilbert Pasqui (from the Pasqui shipyard), Soazig Guého (Mille & Une Vagues), Christophe Gaumont and Jean-Claude Travert (Race Committee members at the Régates Royales), Jean-Claude Montesinos (President of the Yacht Club de Cannes) and de Jean-Paul Ortelli (project manager for the Société des Régates de Cannes). Prize organizer Benoît Godeau from Les Echos - Série Limitée, sponsor of PYTA declared: “The aim of the PYTA is to aknowledge the French and worlds maritime heritage of boats participanting to events on the Atlantic Coast (2) and in the Med (4). The regattas’ organizers choose their local jury who select a boat in each of three categories (less than 12m, from 12m to 18m, more than 18m). Later in the year, in November, a grand jury meets in Paris at the Yacht Club de France to designate the Tradional Yacht of the Year for each category and the overall winner. The restoration in judged according to criteria such as the most accurate to the original design, the materials used, the respect of the yachting etiquette, etc. The eighteen yachts selected, are supported by the different race organizers. The third PYTA award will be presented during next edition of the Paris Boat Show. Starting from this year the Musée de la Marine (the French National Maritime Museum) is also promoting the award that was previously presented to Moonbeam IV (in 2009) and Bona Fide (in 2010). French fashion brand Vicomta has also created a special blazer that goes from winner to winner, same as it happens at golf master series.” | |

| Friday 23 September 2011
| Weather forecast
| | With an anticyclone centred on Cathay and an occluded front between Bordeaux and Prague the pressure gradient looks weak. The outlook is then for a slightly cloudy sky and a light and variable wind. An easterly should set in the morning and then veer to southwesterly along the central hours of the day and become force 2 to 3 later in the afternoon. The start could be postponed waiting for the breeze to set. Tomorrow, for the final day of the Régates Royales –Trophée Panerai, the weather should remain much the same with light sea breezes in the afternoon. |

| Overall provisional rankings after three races
| Among the gaffers UK’s Avel is still in the lead with a four points lead on yesterday’s winner Bona Fide and five on Nan of Fife. In the Big Boats class there are three teams tied at points that is to say MoonBeam IV, Moonbeam of Fife III and Mariquita with fourth placed The Lady Anne distanced only by one point. The Classic division is dominated by French sailors, with Arcadia, Sagittarius and White Dolphin all flying the “tricolour” flag, leading on Italian Navy’s Stella Polare. 2010 champion Rowdy has taken back the lead in the big Marconi class, closely followed by The Blue Peter and US flagged Manitou. Among the smaller Marconi it’s a British/ Italian/German affair with Leonore, Cholita and Anne Sophie at the top. Lionheart scored a win in the Spirit of Tradition class to overtake Shamrock V by one point, whilst the third place is occupied by the “tiny” British Tofinou Jessie. |

Thursday 22 September 2011
| Weather forecast
| | It's decidedly good weather in Cannes and on the Régates Royales – Trophée Panerai. As a high pressure system is established on a vast area from the Canary Islands to Siberia, the atmospheric activity should remain weak and the weather should be good until the end of the week. This does not mean that there will not be any local variations on the next days over the Côte d’Azur. Actually the south-westerly will be replaced by an easterly , light to moderate, that could change during the afternoon due to the land's thermal effect. The temperatures will still remain summery, up to 27C on the central hours of the day under a perfect blue sky, and flat sea. For today the forecast is for an easterly light and variable wind, but the local sea-breeze could well change everything... |

| Phoebus II, fast from the lake
| In 1892 French designer Auguste Godinet conceived an original and experimental new rule, offering an alternative to the traditional V-shaped hulls and the fin-keel and bulb-keel. As the former are theoretically more seafaring, more powerful upwind, but heavy and less spacious. The latter are beamer, flatter and subsequently faster downwind but less safe. Considering the real hull shape, by measuring the “offset”, decreasing the stem to half the hull length, Godinet managed to make boats less extreme, more harmonious and sufficiently stable. Poil-de-Carotte, built by Emille Belly and Auguste Godinet himself was the first of the eleven “Three Tonners” produced, they were pretty different from one another and designed by well known architects like Guédon, de Cactus, Herreshoff or Costaguta. Calypso (Guédon) was also a heavy displacement boat with a V-shaped hull contrary to Poil-de-Carotte (Godinet), a lighter, shorter but also faster boat. Phoebus II is a replica of the original Poil de Carotte launched in 1903. She has been built as an identical copy in 1191 using the hull of Phoebus that was in such a bad state that it was impossible to give her a second life. Phoebus II has taken part to several Bol d’Or races on Lake Geneva since 1992, was also present to the classic yachts events in Brest (92-96-2000) and Gironde in 1996.

| At the centre of the action |
As tradition in Cannes, the classic yachts offered a superb show to the many spectators’ boats and to the public that crowded the beaches on a warm late summer day. The fleet sailed in the area just off the Lerins Islands, on a twenty and twelve mile long coastal course, for the Big Boats and the other classics respectively. Among the Big Boats it was Chris Barkham’s Cambria to cross in first, followed by Moonbeam IV and Moonbeam of Fife III while James Thom’s Mariquita came in fourth. Nan of Fife, Avel and Oriole were on the top three spots in the Classic gaffers class. Stella Polare, the ketch representing the Italian Navy won among the Classics, leaving behind the French couple White Dolphin and Arcadia. Reigning champion in the Marconi class, Rowdy confirmed her supremacy, coming in front of The Blue Peter and US flagged Manitou at her absolute debut in the Régates Royales. Leonore, Anne Sophie and Harlekin respectively jumped on the provisional podium among the smaller Marconi class. And finally, it was Ireland’s Shamrock V to beat Gaulois and Grey One in the Spirit of Tradition division. |
